MATCHING PRODUCT TO HAIR TYPE: A BARBER'S HONEST
ANSWER

A barber's honest breakdown of which Samson's product fits thick, fine, curly, or thinning hair, and why the answer isn't the same for every guy.

A guy picks up a jar in the shop, turns it over, and asks: what does this actually do, and is it right for me?

Adam's answer is always the same. He'd rather tell you the truth and lose the sale than sell you the wrong product and have you never come back. That means matching product to hair type isn't a marketing exercise. It's the actual job.

Thick or coarse hair

If your hair is thick, a little unruly, or coarse, the Dead Sea Clay is Adam's own daily driver.

"If you have thicker hair, a bit more unruly, a bit more coarse, I like the Dead Sea Clay as a daily use."

It's built to handle hair that pushes back: strong all-day hold, fully remoldable, and it washes out with water at the end of the day instead of building up.

Finer or straighter hair

If your hair is finer and straighter, Adam points you somewhere lighter.

"If you have finer straight hair, I would suggest our Matte Styling Cream. It's very light so it won't weigh down your hair, but super matte."

His own comparison is the clearest way to picture it: "like a hair gel without the crunch or the shine."

Control without the weight, and without your hair looking like it's been styled at all.

Curly or textured hair

For guys with real curl or texture who want definition without the crunch, Foster the Curl is built specifically for that.

Adam's read on it: "if you have longer curls, our Foster the Curl Cream is your best bet. It leads to good defined, healthy curls."

The goal is definition that holds without going crispy or greasy, which is usually the two options guys are used to choosing between.

Fine or thinning hair

Here's where we're being straight with you instead of guessing. Adam hasn't recorded a direct answer yet on the best fit for guys with fine or thinning hair who want more volume.

Rather than make something up, we'd rather point you to the quiz, which walks through your specific hair and gives you a real answer instead of a shelf pick.

That's the same call Adam makes in his chair: if he's not sure, he asks more questions before he hands you a jar.

Why this matters more than the marketing usually lets on

A lot of brands will tell you their one product works for everyone. Adam doesn't work that way, and it's not humility, it's just how a barber actually thinks.

He's spent years watching guys use the wrong product because nobody took thirty seconds to ask what their hair was actually doing.

Matching the product to the hair type isn't the upsell. It's the part that makes the product work at all.

If you already know your hair type, use the breakdown above. If you're not sure, or your hair doesn't fit neatly into one of these, take two minutes and get matched instead of guessing.

About the author

Jake Hamlet is a barber and co-founder of Samson's Haircare. He and Adam Muncy have been cutting hair in Kalamazoo, Michigan since 2016, and the two of them still make every product by hand, in small batches, in the same town.

Samson's started because they got tired of selling their clients products they didn't believe in. Everything on the shelf either held your hair or was good for your hair, never both. So they made their own.
